New classroom!

On Wednesday the 5th of September we got rid of our old desks, got different desks, got tote trays and completely changed our classroom! We put our old desks by the school pool. Now we have a lot more room in our class. Our new desks don't have any lids. Along the walls we have quiet zones, We use them for quiet work. In the middle of our classroom we have group tables, We use them to have a little chat while we work. We have a huge place to sit. My favourite thing is we can choose where we sit! It is pretty annoying how whenever we finish something we have to go to the other side of the class just to put something away and how whenever we start something new we have to go to the other side of the class just to get what we need for what we have to do but I don't really mind. I think our new class is amazing. By Mitchell and Quinlan

Speech Marks

In Ruma Iwa we've been learning about speech marks. There are about 4 to 5 rules.

The rules are:

  1. Always start a new line after someone speaks.
  2. Use speech marks before and after someone speaks.
  3. Always use the right punctuation like an exclamation mark, question marks, full stops and comers.
  4. When someone speaks start with a capital letter.

D.O.N.K.E.Y.

Today after Ruma Iwa and Ruma Whitu went to the library, we played a game called D.O.N.K.E.Y. on the field.

We got into groups and made some circles. Then we passed a ball around and if you dropped the ball then you would be a "D". Then once someone in our group dropped the ball enough times they spelled DONKEY. They would be the loser. After we could still play on moving onto Mule and then Horse.

When it finished our group had got to mule. Everyone loved the game and saw some pretty good catches.

Talking Picture Books

In Ruma Iwa we have been making picture books in groups. To make our books a little more interesting we turned them into talking picture books.

Check out our retellings of Hansel and Gretel.

PINOCCHIO PUPPETS

In Ruma Iwa we made Pinocchio puppets because we read the fairytale Pinocchio. We thought it would be cool to have our own puppets.

First we were given paper templates of Pinocchio. Once that was done we coloured each piece in.

Then we cut each piece out and wrote our initials on each piece.

Next we put each piece together with wire.

finally we stuck string on so it would be like a real puppet.

It was an enjoyable activity.

Mason's Hip

Mason has a rare bone disease. It’s called Perthes' disease. It was in Mason’s right leg. He had to have some surgery to fix it up last term and so had to take some time off school. He is back now and check out some photos of the metal rod and bolts  that were in his right leg.

Last week, the 5th of February, Hokowhitu school went down to the court for our 90th birthday. The court had a 90 on it which had been made by some people with chalk. Some of us went and stood on the 90 and let go balloons that had helium in them. We got the ballons from kevin who owns Holiday Fun.
